That's good advice.
But, as some of the example you give demonstrate, it's very easy to get the
opposite effect. That is, anticipating such "potential" problems and
(over)compensating for them injects bias into the process.
As some suggested, card sorting can be positioned to lend a degree of
"credibility" and statistical "validation" where, presumably, designers
otherwise lack the requisite credibility. And yet it's very difficult to be
broadly scientific/unbiased while framing what are ultimately preferential
conceptual approaches to architecture.
Oddly, I agree with your designation, the *art* of card sorting. The irony
is that some people see card sorting as the "scientific" antidote to
"artful" design. Go figure. :-)
