Please join Puget Sound SIGCHI for a presentation on Quantitative Analysis
of Qualitative Data: Turning Categories and Observations into Data Points
No registration is necessary for this free meeting of usability
professionals on Thursday, April 20, at Adobe in the Fremont district of
Seattle.
The presentation is by Terry Sullivan, founder of the information consulting
practice QAQD.com. An expert in the use of psychometric methods in machine
learning, he has over 25 years' research and industry experience in
information science and technology.
To paraphrase Shakespeare, "Richness or rigor—THAT is the question!"
HCI professionals frequently face the daunting task of presenting behavioral
and categorical data in rigorous and systematic ways. Thankfully,
researchers and practitioners in the field of psychometrics have developed
of a set of remarkably powerful tools that permit quantitative analysis of
qualitative data. These tools support both richness AND rigor, in a
complementary and often synergistic way. Using an example of
"accessibility," this presentation will serve as a high-level introduction
to the methods and practices of quantitative psychology and examine their
applicability within the broader field of HCI.
