Compared to the "old" NYT site, sure.

But if you were sitting on top of one of the most respected and extensive
news/opinion reservoirs of the planet, in the year 2006 and with all that's
technically feasible, is that what you'd come up with? That of course is a
leading question, more in the direction of digital product/corporate focus
strategy than mostly visual display.

To me, the new design still smells newsprint.
