Perhaps. Parts of Asia and the Arabic world were doing pretty well then, 
though. Some historians I know reckon the 18th century was the zenith of 
  European (and particularly British) influence, power and so forth. 
Being naturally polite, we don't talk about the 18th century any more :-)

Yes, I was thinking of that. It's interesting, actually - I work for a 
company that was a mid-nineties startup. We generally aren't trying to 
invent radical technologies to take over the world, but we've found a 
niche where we can be successful. By US standards I suspect we'd be 
considered a failure - we haven't floated on the stock exchange, and not 
one of us owns a speedboat :-)
