nonetheless, this is a better example of inertia than of slavish  
devotion to standards.

the situation is  different in an example like this, where you're  
talking about changing a product that literally millions of get used  
each hour.

the products that are being described are filling niches - large,  
profitable niches, probably, but a drop in the bucket in the overall  
screw market.

so, millions of users every hour (probably every minute really) will  
continue to use conventionally produced screws for one simple reason:  
they work well.

the story of why americans don't use Robertson screws is actually an  
interesting example of standards and, contrary to popular canadian  
myth, the answer is not simply "they wouldn't grant a patent"  
although that is a part of it.
