If the premise is true ("categories are too general"), then this is an
unsolvable problem. Take "design" and the multitudes design-related job
categories that grossly overlap, for example.

This may be less of a problem, if you use nested/hierarchical/cascading
displays that progressively narrow options perhaps with multiple listbox
selection options that dynamically change downstream from the choices the
user makes.

What's the bottleneck in this question? Seems to me the one aspect you have
no control over: the automated credit check service. I'd start with that and
use the technique above to drill down.
