Wouldn't Apple be facing the same conundrum? Their strategy seems to
be largely based on a tight coupling of hardware and software. 

I know you cited the iPod, but historically Apple has shown a much
stronger tendency to link hardware and software than Microsoft has.
And this philosophy continues at Apple. Take the upcoming switch to
Intel processors. You will still need Apple hardware to run OS X.

I'd suggest that the xBox is Microsoft's big exception. In many ways
it doesn't follow the standard Microsoft model.

Why is this a conundrum from Microsoft but not for Apple?
