One of the things Google does is to check their datastream for clues.
Instead of having impossibly complex correction algorithms to suggest
spelling alternatives, for example as I posted a few days ago, they can look
at sequential search patterns to associate similar words. Such efforts to
discover user "intent" however requires large pools of user interaction
history, without which "guesses" become more random than clever. So if you
have such comparable historical usage data guessing the domain the search
should be applied to becomes a non-visible but crucial part of the UI.
