[Sigia-l] expert vs novice

hi

I'm starting work on a website which clearly has two audience groups;

a) sophisticated technical users who are familiar with data search and
retrieval systems and who know what they're looking for

b) people who are predominantly browsing, looking for a easy
introduction to the data (eg: start with the light and fluffy then
perhaps dig down further) and usually not looking for anything specific

I haven't yet had a chance to research the audience further than that,
but I wanted to get a heads up on how I might go about designing a
solution for each, using the same underlying data.

Can anyone give me the benefit of their experience in doing such a
thing? Anything to watch out for? Can anyone point me towards any
research regarding creating both expert and novice interfaces? Or even
any tips on how to get users from these respective groups to the right
interface for them, ie: self-categorisation etc

thanks in advance

Patrick
