So here's another example of forcing users to try to "puzzle something out".
It's not there anymore but Skidmore College once had an entry page featuring 
nothing but (what I assume) a well-known picture of Skidmore's founder. The 
picture was reduced to black and white EXCEPT FOR the colored (red) rose in his 
lapel. One eventually, after a number of seconds related to one's IQ, clicked on 
the red rose. Back in 1995 or so I thought it brilliant. Hell, I still think it 
brilliant!
