On a similar note, here's a 3D web-integrated environment in
development at the University of Minnesota:
http://www.opencroquet.org
...it's worth noting that the scope of Croquet goes beyond that of
traditional web pages but is focused on providing a highly
interactive, highly customizable (you can create your own
environments) 3D environment. A number of months ago, I attended a
presentation by Mark Mccahill (of Gopher fame), who now leads the
project. My impression was that while this promises high utility for
certain kinds of multi-person interactions (ex online instruction),
I'd probably rather just stick with 2D until the technology matures.
Still, I feel it does point towards an interesting online future.
