I've been an admirer of Google's architects but a long-time critic of their
interface designers, who admittedly work for the engineers.

For a while, Yahoo was lost in the wilderness of expedient web commercialism
without any hope. I'm actually impressed by the number of moves they've made
in the past year. So hopefully they'll be a worthy competitor to Google.

One way to attack GMail was their interface design and, even though Yahoo is
using a traditional three-pane UI, it seems they have taken the right visual
design bet against it. Good on Yahoo and let's hope they'll wake up
higher-ups at Google to pay more attention to the visual aspects of
interface design.
