Just pointing out your "piss poor design" statement is an inaccurate
over generalization (and bit ironic too). If you say the sky looks
green to you, who can argue? But If you say the sky *is* green, well
that's a different matter. You may be surprised to hear that opinions
are not facts.
Such inaccurate malignant opinions passed off as fact can have
consequences. Some open source is really bad. And some is really good.
A new subscriber might take you seriously and not even explore Open
Office or 7-Zip as a result. And that would be a shame.
> You consider yourself a "mainstream" user on Mac or Win?
Irrelevant question
> Name 12 open source apps that a mainstream computer user
> would *pay* money to use.
Again irrelevant. I mentioned nothing of paying. Merely that your
malignant over generalization is inaccurate.
> Name 6-7 shrink-wrapped OS apps that are "successful among mainstream
retail markets."
I'm not sure what you mean by "shrink-wrapped"? Are you using it
literally? If so, then I can't name any since I have only ever
downloaded open source apps. If not, here's your list:
eMule, firefox, thunderbird, virtual dub, apache, mysql, shareaza. In
addition to some of these I also use 7-zip, phpmyadmin, php, wordpress,
filezilla, Open Office, and mercury. And I won't go into detail about
all the specialized open source utilities I use. I'm no geek and I find
all of them easy to install, easy to learn, easy to use, and offer
exactly the functionality I need with a minimum of trouble.
> And if you wanted to contribute to the betterment of OS software,
> would you concentrate on its packaging or its fundamental design
issues?
Once more, entirely irrelevant. Enough with the windmills don.
> You need to follow current conversations in the online world.
That was needlessly snippy. I guess I just don't have as much free time
on my hands to follow all current conversations in the online world. My
thanks to Jared for actually answering my question.
