I currently work at an international organization with a Web site
resembling a library-cum-newspaper-cum-specialised database. No funnels,
no checkout processes come to our aid in identifying critical points where
anything similar to conversion rates can be calculated.
Beside what Jared Spool is suggesting (translating approaches and metrics
to a non-commercial environment), which we are already doing based on Jim
Sterne's excellent "Web Metrics", I'd like to know if any of you has
adopted any original approach to identify metrics for use of information
in a situation where no formal transaction takes place.

putting it together, but it is *very* e-commerce focused. You can learn
a lot there, but you'll have to take extra effort to translate the
lessons from their native e-commerce basis into what you'd need at the
university.
