TRAINING: An Overview of Open SourceMy apologies if this is showing up in
your mail more than once - I am posting to multiple lists...

Seth

Earley & Associates will repeat the successful series addressing critical
issues in taxonomy and metadata. The series will move attendees through:

- Core business models and justification for unifying taxonomic and
structural metadata

- A step-by-step process for deriving taxonomies and metadata standards

- Advanced thesaurus management

- Technical integration of standards and terms across systems using XML and
Web Services.

Cost is $50 per session or $175 for all four.

Register for: sessions at http://www.earley.com/events.htm

Comments from past attendees:

"If you add up all the expertise that's been presented thus far in your
sessions, it's way more than I have gotten anywhere else within the same
time frame. It's been focused, to the point, and convenient." - Jan C.
Wright, Wright Indexing

"This is the best series on this topic that I have been to..."

"I am learning more in these calls than I have at multi-day conferences"

"The courses I took in Library school now make sense..."

"There's no other place I could have access to this level of expertise
without hiring a costly consultant..."

"These have been incredibly valuable - we have applied these concepts to our
Intranet and content management projects "

Taxonomy Basics - April 7th, 2005

2:00 - 3:15 PM EST

Build the business case and explain the value of taxos

This intro level presentation covers business reasons and justifications for
applying a structure and methodology to metadata management. We begin with
basic models and explain concepts in non-technical language. This session is
ideal for business decision makers but also for anyone who wants a simple
way to communicate the message to a larger audience.

- Making the business case

- Categorization versus search

- Metadata standards

- Ontologies and taxonomies

- Laying out a Roadmap

Intermediate Topics - April 14th, 2005

2:00 - 3:15 PM EST

 Deriving and applying taxos

After the basics, we will walk through the step-by- step process for
deriving and applying systems for classification. This session will help
content managers, developers, metadata architects, project managers and
others involved in metadata standards begin the process of developing
taxonomies. We will also cover how structured meta data differs from
taxonomic meta data.

- Deriving a taxonomy

- Process steps

- Mapping user scenarios

- Integrating taxonomy and navigation

- Validation and refinement

Advanced Taxonomy Management - April 21st, 2005

2:00 - 3:15 PM EST

Understand and manage complex taxo structures

After initial derivation of classification systems, organizations will find
that their different departments have different needs. Taxonomies tend to
diverge as they are applied. How can this be reconciled? What are the
governance models that make sense? These issues and more will be explored in
this session.

- Thesaurus management

- Multiple taxonomies and polyhierarchies

- Impact analysis and workflow rules

- Governance models

Technical Integration - April 28th, 2005

2:00 - 3:15 PM EST

How to integrate applications with a common metadata framework

In many organizations, having derived the system for classification is half
the battle. Instead of passing around spreadsheets and publishing terms in a
thesaurus, taxonomies can be deeply integrated into applications and
processes using XML and web services. This deep dive gets into the details
of technical architecture and gives attendees an overview of various
approaches

- Metadata and XML

- Exposing taxonomic terms through web services

- The role of XSD's, DTD's XLST's

- WSDL's and UDDI

- Search engine and application integration

- Example code
