[Sigia-l] Portlets and large data sets

I am looking for reference information (examples, articles, tutorials, etc) on displaying large data sets within portals and using portlets.
Specifically, the application I am working on monitors large networks (for telecom companies). There are many (many) layers of information- from the physical circuit up to a contract with a customer. 
I need to be able to display this with clarity and usability.
