You pretty much described what's wrong with the UI, for which you propose
the sitemap as a remedy.
The remedy is to *not* design "large corporate sites" with "six or seven
top-level menus" especially if they are "fly-outs or flash-based."
The horse, the cart, etc.

P.S. I am not against densely designed points of departure per se (a sitemap
often falls into that category), I'm, however, against using a sitemap as a
crutch when redesigning the main navigation would be the better solution.
