I don't know if a sitemap does that or not, but a more fundamental question
is: does your audience actually need a birds-eye view of the site at all?
Site designers/developers care about site architecture in general and in
minutiae, the vast majority of users simply do not. They are often there to
access specific items, and it's your search/navigation that ought to
accomplish that most directly. I'd much rather have someone actually tell me
"Aisle 5, left side, bottom" than to parse a store map or an elaborate
listing.
