Unless this was done for Apple, the compensation was not in the form of
"company's product for compensation," as Anthony inquired. IOW, this
anecdote speaks to cash vs. a product, not cash vs. the company product.
Offering the actual product being tested as (full/partial) compensation can
indeed open a can of biased worms.
