[Sigia-l] Alternative compensation for usability participants?

OK, but I'm more interested in the issue of bias. I would think there's
more potential for participant bias if we're offering the company's
product for compensation, as opposed to cash, which seems somewhat arm's
length.
Risk of reducing the test's validity is a more compelling argument for
choosing a course of action at this point.
If no-one thinks this is an issue then I can go along with giving out
schwag.

sometimes when we're testing a web site for a company and we want
participants who use the company products then it is easier to recruit
participants by compensating them with company products that they
already
use (particularly if the participant isn't motivated by cash but is
motivated by free products).
i also like product compensation that isn't company-branded products.
(an
ipod shuffle for an hour of my time reviewing some web site :)
however, with that said, i like cash as compensation and if we're giving
away company products then i like for cash to be an alternative if the
participant doesn't want the product(s).
