Well, two things happened; a) The viola reached a natural peak in
compositional music (at around 1600, specifically Gabrielis music),
but just as the solo voice got focus from the creation of opera
(specifically the lament, first popularised by Monteverdi's
'Arianna'), so did the solo voice of other given orchestral (as far as
you can stretch that term)  instruments. b) The viola is somewhat
limiting the way it was played (between your legs, pretty much), and
some people of superiour skills took the solo viola to its natural
consequence by moving it into a position where better handling could
be achieved, which was the violin.
