[Sigia-l] Personalized Portal: New front end or Web 2.0?

We have been kicking the tires and experimenting with implementing a
"MyCompany" type of personalized portal for what is conceptually an
intranet. Since this is a large enterprise, there are many different
projects underway to define the content for various groups and things are
starting to take shape.
However, as people are making plans to roll out their personalized portals
to their audiences, some groups are suggesting that we shut down our
existing intranet "since it's going to be in the portal". There rationale
is that having multiple ways to access information is confusing and
redundant. I was rather caught off-guard by this explanation, especially
in light of the fact that many areas of the company are not into the portal
yet.
Does anybody have any case histories/war stories/research available to
suggest how to proceed with a migration to a portal? I'm trying to weigh
all of the gotchas here before making any rash statements.
Mike
