Right. This is where I lose you though...

and, btw, i meant to say that obviously sound is a great cue for the 
blind. i'm not ridiculing it universally.

i've seen interesting interfaces designed around sound. using sound to 
guide users to screen areas and interface elements.

apple's interface elements never did they - they responded to clicks, 
generally. this made them less useful and more intrusive - just adding 
one more distraction to a simple interface. hence i found them 
annoying.

my german ex-father in law on the other hand loved them; the general 
theory was that he only turned them on cause i was trying them. bet he 
still uses them - his vision's not very good, so they probably helped 
him more than me.
