Perhaps you could deploy a Java applet on your website to do the research for you? This would tell you about YOUR existing users. The applet could be zero-sized (on the page) and very light-weight (a single .class file even, rather than a jar), and just report the JVM version back to your webserver by concatenating a base URL on your web-server with the version string, and then reading from that URL. Then you could check your server logs for results.
