Which is why I made the original point about the audience being "canned".
In this sense, canned means having a user base that you have access to, that
you can run screens by, examine how the users work, and so on.
So, pretty much, in my example, YES, you would "ask them".
If you were to actually read the entirety of my post, you would see that I
made the statement that if it were not a canned audience, the more globally
usable solution is the check box approach.
I will make the point again: If you *can* ask the users, do so. Only your
users know what makes their work easier. Only your users can give you real
feedback on whether or not the ideas that you espouse are good or not. Only
your users should be the basis of any decision you make.

How would you know what users 'want'? Ask them?
I imagine Hollywood where all movies are box office boffos, all TV sitcoms
hits, all books are bestsellers and all MP3 players are iPods.
