Not necessarily Flash animation. I've seen more than a few sites where the
index page is pure html, with just a big logo or some thematic image taking
centre stage. Clicking that might lead to another page, explaining what the
site is about, or the problem they solve, or some such, with a final click
leading to the "home" page which has all the navigation links. Some even set
a cookie so that return visitors get redirected to the "home" page
immediately. Today it could all be done with AJAX.

All theatrics, but purposeful: the home page is most useful when you know
what the site is all about, without cluttering the home page with all that
exposition, if you are in fact entering via the front page and not via
google.

Meanwhile, those long drawn out 'skip intro' flash abominations were the
worst kind of theatre. Even the daytime soaps are not that slow, heavy
handed, and just plain silly.
