This is exactly why I gave the example of acoustic fingerprint lookups.
Tagged radio dissemination assumes a central authority, standards,
compliance, etc. We're not terribly good at it here, sometimes to our
detriment, but often not. In that sense, the acoustic fingerprint
alternative doesn't need industry-wide centralization or transmission
standards. It doesn't rely on the device that receives the music, but on an
external device whose form factor can vary (PDA, cellphone, USB keychain,
etc). And I don't have to strike up a trade agreement with, say Sony-BMG, to
ID their songs. Plus I can provide a lot more useful information about a
song than what could be in a commonly agreed upon bare-minimum standard. The
problem with it is that, unlike a mandated and strictly regulated regime, it
may be less accurate.
