Depending on the context (and I know I should use that word advisedly
around here...) you might consider adding mailing list and/or NNTP
gateway capability. I worked on a project where we took a couple of
public mailing lists into the forums and let our users reply to posts on
them (a bit like Google Groups). It went down well and usage of the site
overall increased greatly. We were using pHorum for this.
