Incidentally, this is one of the advantages of working under a contract.
Everything has a price. If additional work has to be done, additional money
has to be paid. This does wonders in terms of discipline, prioritizing
objectives, setting/sticking to deadlines, etc.
In a recent contract, I felt the company was dragging its collective feet in
providing domain specific information to me. So we amended my contract and I
put in a 48-hour deadline for info submittal and sign-offs. When a member of
the team came in with a late request, I didn't even have to open my mouth.
Others told him to justify the deadline extension and extra money they'd
have to pay me. Problem solved.
I suspect that if I were the lead designer on staff, I wouldn't have had
that choice.
