It is likely that in early pages of search results, the hit count is an
estimation - otherwise Google would have to consider every single document
just to get the ten highest-matched for the first page, for instance (by
allowing the estimation, they can probably arrange to stop considering
documents in detail once they've got a certain number of results). That's
certainly how some other IR systems work ...
