Jared Spool and the folks at UIE have done some research on this.  I
recalled them discussing this point at length in their most recent
roadshow, The Secret Design Strategies of Highly Effective Web Sites.
They de-bunked the "users don't scroll" rule.  Users said one thing, "I
don't scroll", but in the end, they behaved differently.  They actually
do scroll if they find the content relevant and compelling -- That "IF"
being the critical factor.
