I'm just finishing a UI/usability redesign project on a series of webcasting
applications so I had to deal with RealPlayer.

If you ever had to use the Real player over the years, especially on
Windows, you know just how aggressively hostile it can be in taking over
things and abusing user's preferences.

There's a series of articles, with input from Real employees/consultants,
that paint such a classical picture of how not to design software/product
and how users can be abused in the process. Should be required reading for
both app designers and marketing people:
