OK, I'll bite.

I think Lane is spot on. 'Traditional' HCI style usability doesn't always 
apply to web (information more than interaction) in the same way that 
it applies to software/devices etc.

I've recently been turned down clients who want usability tests on 
websites. In most cases they don't know who their user group is or 
what they want to do with the site. If they don't know that, and we run 
a test, anything that comes out of it is completely artificial. Research 
is a much better proposition, and design that they test iteratively 
rather than me testing as a big-bang.
