Chris,

Sounds like you're focused on  UML and not UCD.

(Translation - if you're really practicing user centered design than a web 
service is never a 'user' - no program or server is every a user ).

I sometimes worry some people here are worrying too much about the 
technical side and not enough on the architecture side.
