You suggested the checkbox method to counter the scenario that
justifies using the "Clear" button. I interpreted that as recommending
a design substitute that tries to sidestep the need. Thus, I put
forward a core scenario to see how it would be handled.

So, the checkbox method (individual field persistence) does not
eliminate the need of having a "Clear" button?

wanting to clear the persisted fields is a core scenario, not a
straw-man.
