I should have added the canonical example for this: Yahoo vs Google.
I consider a site's architecture inseparable from its UI. Given that, by
streamlining its user experience (clutter, ads, directories, payola, etc on
one side and simple, focused, useful offerings on the other), Google ate
Yahoo's breakfast, lunch and dinner to reach a purported market cap in
excess of $20 billion, in about three years.
