Are you sure you're not confusing that which is easier to build versus
that which may or may not be most practical to use?

I have to assert, again, that it's a case-by-case basis and it depends
heavily upon HOW users are using applications and what their core bits
of functionality might be. It also depends upon such items as budgets
and capabilities of resources; I'm not forgetting that.
In a lot of cases, DHTML-based top-level drop-down navigations might be
the most practical; they certainly don't consume the left and right
sides as much as, well, left- and right-side navigations do, but that
would also be something that would need to be determined after some
initial analysis had been accomplished.
What I'm most surprised at on this list is that people are so quick to
pick a side and choose a solution when *we* of all people shouldn't be
doing that, unless we're pointing out a preference, which is pointing
out a bias and probably hinders our work. We *should* be treating every
application, web site, etc. etc. on a case-by-case basis, performing our
analysis and proceeding as well-armed as we could possibly be. Anything
less than that and we're failing our clients.
