Hello:

When I was researching this topic a few months ago, I had a difficult
time finding web-specific books. However, I did find a few books that
gave solid advice on some of the finer details of independent
contracting.

"How to Succeed as an Independent Consultant" - Tim RV Foster
"Smart Business for Contractors: A Guide to Money and the Law" - Jim
Kramon
"The Small Business Survival Guide" - Robert E. Fleury

For proposal writing and other project management advice, I'd advise the
PMI site (search the knowledgebase):
http://www.pmi.org/info/PIR_KWCOverview.asp?nav=0603

Networking with other independents was my best source of information,
and I'd recommend checking in with any local high-tech business
networking group for support.

Hope this helps -

Best,
Mary

A friend of mine was asking me for resources on how to conduct business
as an independent IA (and web designer). He wanted to know if there are
any books/sites out there that go into enough detail on setting hourly
rates, proposal writing, web-specific issues, etc. There are so many
books out there that it's hard to know if there are any that are really
worthwhile.
