Ethnographic research? Yeah, we use it pretty regularly. Used it lately
as part of our user research on:

1) Large grocery chain to refine their on-line shopping model. We
looked at shopping and list making patterns in two distinct regions in
the US (philly and seattle)
2) A couple of applications related to NCLB (No Child Left Behind)
3) On-line bill payment and account management application for a
utility company

It definitely applies. Intel does quite a bit of ethnographic research
in Asia - large technology market over there.

In theory, theory and practice are the same.
In practice, they are not.
