Speaking of the past, RIAs to me have many similarities with Hypercard.
It was interactive, contained multimedia, but was still much like a
database - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperCard
There seems to be a rapidly growing number of applications that are
similar to Hypercard's basic platform with plugins, whether intentional
or not - Quicksilver, Eclipse etc mostly in the field of information
management. They are interesting to study from an information
architecture point of view because of the assumptions they do and don't
make about the way people make connections between objects.
