We came to the same conclusion generally. We just implemented a search
tool on our site -- never had one. Today is the last day of the project!
It comes down to how much upfront work you need to do (create a
taxonomy, metatag all pages, etc.,) your infrastructure (what tool plays
nicely with it,) how much you want to spend for what feature set (i.e.
Convera vs. Google appliance,) the size of your target (file disk
volume,) the type of targets (.htm, .doc, .pdf, etc.) and how well or
how much you will be supported after-sale. That's all reference call
work -- the more references the better, in and outside your industry.
Call offline if you want to discuss our experience.
Good luck!
