Sorry I can't resist:
It seems like the digested mail should be presented in a better format
to make this easier. (Yes, I know mailman is an open source product
that serves thousands of lists.) Here are some ideas for how digest
could be made better:
* Each individual message could be sent as an MIME attachment.
This would allow the user's email client to treat the digested
message better. (My email client lists all the attachments
together and I can expand them one at a time inline with the
rest of the message. I've used other email clients that allow
users to view a message with lots of message attachments as
virtual folders.)
* The digest could be sent as HTML with anchors at the beginning
of each message. At the top, TOC links could scroll you to each
message. Additionally, after each message there could be a
"Back to TOC" link. I could even imagine a link at the
beginning of each included message allowing the reader to skip
to the next message.
* The digest could trim long messages. If a message is over a
certain size -- say 4k, it could put the URL to the archived
message so the reader can continue reading.
