Although an intro is a good idea, not everyone would pay attention.

It seems like breaking the intro into its component parts and placing 
those parts in the application where they apply: add contextual help 
and better instructions.

Of course, you'd have to be able to adjust the apps interface. Not sure 
if this is an option, but this would at least be a better band-aid than 
a pop-up tutorial (that I feel most users would ignore).

Definitely an interesting subject, though. It seems I'm having to 
adjust to more and more older applications lately, where redesigning 
them isn't an option.
