[Sigia-l] Taxonomy subcontractor position

MIT Lincoln Laboratory Library is seeking a subcontractor with 
experience in taxonomy or thesaurus development to assist in the 
development of a Laboratory taxonomy.

MIT Lincoln Laboratory has pioneered in advanced electronics since its 
origin in 1951 as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center of 
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Its Library is preparing a 
taxonomy to describe Laboratory work and to provide a browse navigation 
structure for Laboratory documents.  We are using MultiTes, a thesaurus 
management software, to classify terms and assign them a place in a 
hierarchy.  The final taxonomy will contain approximately 1500 terms, 
with a maximum of 25 term clusters at the top level. The taxonomy will 
be published for comment by Laboratory scientists in early 2004. Testing 
and validation will occur thereafter and the taxonomy will be 
implemented as a browsing structure.
The subcontractor will participate with our taxonomy team to:

 * Provide consultation as needed on recommended taxonomy development 
processes
 * Develop a data-gathering and interview process to define  top level 
user requirements
 * Implement a process to gather user input about proposed subject 
hierarchies and terminology
 * Conduct interviews with subject experts, along with members of  the team
 * Compile and synthesizing user input
 * Package a hierarchical structure of the taxonomy to distribute for 
comment to users
 * Develop quality control process of final taxonomy
 * Develop taxonomy maintenance plan

Other subcontractor responsibilities that may or may not be included in 
this scope of work:
 * Adding scope notes for existing terms

The subcontractor should have experience with taxonomy and thesaurus 
development, preferably in the areas of science or defense technology, 
be familiar with MultiTes or other taxonomy software tools, have 
information seeking expertise and have knowledge of user behavior.
