Some of the disadvantages of remote data collection were discussed in a long
thread here a little over a year ago, if I remember correctly.

The difference is like getting a prepared dish in front of you with a
printed recipe vs. watching the entire dish being made in the kitchen.
There's no substitute to actually talking to users and observing them in
action. If you're going to do this remotely, at least have a statistically
meaningful sample; 3 out 5 people placing an item on top, without
observation, usually doesn't tell me anything.
