David, the impetus behind "personalization" has been at least 1/2
advertising/marketing driven. Web operators hyped their ability to track
consumers at a very granular level to offer advertisers a competitive
advantage over other ad platforms. So advertisers essentially demanded user
tracking which is the other side of the personalization coin. Your needs as
a user, it turns out, wasn't necessarily on top of the agenda.
Having said that, there are many, many useful examples of personalization on
the web as well.
