Why use arrows to indicate sort order?

I know at least one database that uses an icon that looks like a set of
steps:

ascending (not to scale ;-)

        +-+
        | |
      +-+ |
      | | |
    +-+ | |
    | | | |
    +-+-+-+

and you can guess the descending icon.
