Daniel,
While I appreciate this inquiry and the responses that have come in so
far, it sounds as though you're framing all information design and
wayfinding systems in the context of "web" information architecture.
Mapmaking is a centuries-old discipline and has informed information
architecture, not the other way around. Perhaps what you're interested
in the roots of information architecture as a a practice. Cartography,
architecture, urban design, environmental design and signage,
retailing, graphic design, software design and engineering, library
science -- even semiotics and phenomenology. Or, if you're looking for
the way IA practiced on/for the web has bled back into other
disciplines, then it might be useful to compare the disciplines "before
and after" the evolution of web-IA.

With that said, I also recommend:

Good luck!
