Well, if you have "overlayChildren" turned on successive slides get built
with overlaid elements from preceding slides, so any given slide in the
sequence is never 'complete.'

I can't speak to your discipline problem:-) but you can set up
Fireworks/Flash to do exactly the same. Just create a set of symbols with
the lo-fi look and drag them in from the Library. In fact, Flash MX 2004 has
a fairly decent set of pre-built components, much bigger than the lame
component set in the previous version of Flash MX.
