I suspect this is not exactly what you are looking for, but it seems that
online publications are the obvious examples.

The closest I can think of to this is The Economist (www.economist.com),
where you can read some articles, buy a subscription to the site or
pay-per-article. Mother Jones (www.motherjones.com) is another publication
that let's users read some articles for free and pay for others.

No matter what the case it shows you what is available by offering you links
to the articles and abstracts, then prompts you to subscribe or log-in.
